Kaprow 'Impurity'

I have been reading Allan Kaprow’s essay ‘Impurity’ (1963) where he argues that Mondrian’s use of lines can be seen as an object. The line is a gesture is where the outward moved is balanced exactly with a withdrawal, and a neutrality results that contains the opposing energies in an intensified form. Mondrian used this principle by multiplying close variations of this theme almost indefinitely. The opposing lines in the horizontal/ vertical grids provide an equilibrium of clearly opposed elements. In the structure the eye of the viewer performs the object/ground exchange making the painting a 3D object.
