I presented 4 video pieces for the final show. Each video was on a loop with periods of black in between, so there was a kind of randomness to when the videos would start playing. Sometimes all were on, sometimes just one etc. There were made to stand alone and had been planned to be in four different parts of the gallery but as I put them all together to test that all the equipment and the DVD's did work, they produced this wonderful musicality between them. I felt like the videos did lose some of their individual integrity but really enjoyed watching them work together so I kept them at that.
One of my favourite pieces to make was the 'Playing DEAD (with my nose)'. See image.
This was a piece of work where I gone into the studio to film myself playing the notes D E A D all up the keyboard, with my nose, in one shot. When I began to try it I realised that it was a very difficult thing to do. I luckily left the video recording and it took over 7 minutes of my trying to accomplish the work. What I really like was my concentration and the total immersion in the piece and that I was oblivious to the camera being there. My nose began to hurt and I kept on stopping to rub it, my jeans need pulling up and you can hear me puffing and tutting when I messed it up. When I went to edit the video, I thought that seeing the process of me working and of trying (and trying) to get the thing done was much more watchable than a controlled, edited piece which just showed the end result. It is also a kind of metaphor to my art practice and the way I was feeling about the whole object making. It's the process and not the final outcome which is important for me.
